COPAL CP SOUND 402 S SUPER 8 PROJECTOR
Vintage Telecine Projector - Variable Speeds ( 18 & 24 fps) - Made in Japan by Copal
There are a lot of variable speed Super 8 projectors being sold as telecine projectors. Because for a Super 8 projector to qualify as a true Telecine projector it must come equipped with more than just a variable speed dial. Variable speeds may eliminate flicker, but variable speeds alone will not give you edge to edge sharpness. Variable speeds alone will not eliminate the dreaded center "hot spot".
A true Telecine must be fitted with a quality projection lens that will give you sharp corner to corner images. Low end variable speed projectors have junk (plastic) lenses that are only sharp in the center of the screen, while corners are blurry and dark.
Only a few of affordable Super 8 projectors qualify as being true telecine - the Copal CP Series being one of them. The Copal CP402 is a top of the line Super 8 Sound projector that is equal in overall quality to the Elmo ST-180 and is one of the few Super 8 projectors that is fitted with a stroboscopic sync speed indicator for both 18fps and 24fps speeds (kind of like a high-end turntable). It allows you to achieve speed sync by turning the speed dial until the lines appear to come to a stand still.
